Lord Mahavir was the twenty fourth andlastTirthankara of the Jain religion of this era. According toJainphilosophy, all Tirthankaras were human beings but theyhaveattained a state of perfection or enlightenment throughmeditationand self-realization. They are the Gods of Jains. Theconcept ofGod as a creator, protector, and destroyer of theuniverse does notexist in Jainism. Also the idea of God'sreincarnation as a humanbeing to destroy the demons is not acceptedin Jainism. LordMahavir was born on the thirteenth day of risingmoon of Chaitramonth, 599 B.C. in the state of Bihar, India. Thisday falls in themonth of April as per English calendar. Hisbirthday is celebratedas Mahavir Jayanti day. Mahavir was a princeand was given the nameVardhaman by his parents. Being son of aking, he had many worldlypleasures, comforts, and services at hiscommand. But at the age ofthirty, he left his family and royalhousehold, gave up his worldlypossessions, and become a monk insearch of a solution to eliminatepain, sorrow, andsufferings.
