There are various types of trains thataredesigned for particular purposes. A train can consist ofacombination of one or more locomotives and attached railroadcars,or a self-propelled multiple unit (or occasionally a singleorarticulated powered coach, called a railcar). Trains can alsobehauled by horses, pulled by a cable, or run downhill by gravity.

Special kinds of trains running on correspondingspecial'railways' are atmospheric railways, monorails,high-speedrailways, maglev, rubber-tired underground, funicular andcograilways.

A passenger train may consist of one or several locomotivesandcoaches. Alternatively, a train may consist entirely ofpassengercarrying coaches, some or all of which are powered as a"multipleunit". In many parts of the world, particularly the FarEast andEurope, high-speed rail is used extensively forpassengertravel.

Freight trains are composed of wagons or trucks ratherthancarriages, though some parcel and mail trains(especiallyTravelling Post Offices) are outwardly more likepassengertrains.

Trains can also be 'mixed', comprising bothpassengeraccommodation and freight vehicles. Such mixed trains aremostlikely to occur where services are infrequent, and runningseparatepassenger and freight trains is not cost-effective, thoughthediffering needs of passengers and freight usually means thisisavoided where possible.
