Turkey is a Eurasian country located inWestern Asia (mostly in the Anatolian peninsula) and in East Thracein Southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries:Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to thenortheast; Armenia, Azerbaijan (the exclave of Nakhchivan) and Iranto the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The MediterraneanSea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean Sea is to the west; andthe Black Sea is to the north. The Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorusand the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits)demarcate the boundary between East Thrace and Anatolia; they alsoseparate Europe and Asia.

Turkey is one of the six independent Turkic states. 70-88% ofthe population are ethnic Turks. The country's official language isTurkish, which is spoken by approximately 85% of the population asmother tongue. Kurdish and Zazaki languages are spoken by Kurds andZazas, who together constitute 9-25% of the population. The vastmajority of the population is Muslim. Other minorities are thoughtto make up between 7 and 12% of the population.

Oghuz Turks began migrating into the area now called Turkey(derived from the Medieval Latin Turchia, i.e. "Land of the Turks")in the 11th century. The process was greatly accelerated by theSeljuk victory over the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert.Several small beyliks and the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm ruledAnatolia until the Mongol invasion. Starting from the 13th century,the Ottoman beylik united Anatolia and created an empireencompassing much of Southeastern Europe, Western Asia and NorthAfrica. After the Ottoman Empire collapsed following its defeat inWorld War I, parts of it were occupied by the victorious Allies. Acadre of young military officers, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk andhis colleagues, organized a successful resistance to the Allies; in1923, they would establish the modern Republic of Turkey withAtatürk as its first president.
