Lady bugs are and have been for very manyyears a favorite insect of children. The insects had many regionalnames in English, such as the lady-cows, may-bug, golden-knop,golden-bugs; and variations on Bishop-Barnaby – Barnabee, Burnabee,the Bishop-that-burneth, and bishy bishy barnabee. The etymology isunclear but it may be from St. Barnabas feast in June, when theinsect appears or a corruption of "Bishop-that-burneth", from thefiery elytra of the beetles.

The ladybird was immortalized in the still-popular children'snursery rhyme Ladybird, Ladybird:
Ladybird, ladybird, fly away home
Your house is on fire and your children are gone
All except one, and that's Little Anne
For she has crept under the warming pan.

The ladybug's family name, Coccinelid, is derived from the Latinword coccineus meaning scarlet. The name ladybird originated inBritain where the insects became known as Our Lady's bird or theLady beetle. Mary (Our Lady) was often depicted wearing a red cloakin early paintings and the spots of the seven spot ladybird (themost common in Europe) were said to symbolise her seven joys andseven sorrows. In the United States the name was adapted toladybug. Common names in other European languages have the sameassociation, for example, the German name Marienkäfer translates toMarybeetle.
