Chess is a two-player board game played onachessboard, a square checkered board with 64 squares arranged inaneight-by-eight grid. It is one of the world's most populargames,played by millions of people worldwide at home, in clubs,online,by correspondence, and in tournaments.

Each player begins the game with sixteen pieces: one king,onequeen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.Eachof the six piece types moves differently. Pieces are used toattackand capture the opponent's pieces, with the object of thegamebeing to 'checkmate' the opponent's king by placing it underaninescapable threat of capture. In addition to checkmate, thegamecan be won by the voluntary resignation of one's opponent,whichtypically occurs when too much material is lost, or ifcheckmateappears unavoidable. A game may also result in a draw inseveralways, where neither player wins. The course of the game isdividedinto three phases: opening, middlegame and endgame.

Chess is a recognized sport of theInternationalOlympic Committee, and international chess competitionissanctioned by the World Chess Federation. There are also manychessvariants, with different rules, different pieces, anddifferentboards.

Since the second half of the 20th century, computers havebeenprogrammed to play chess with increasing success, to thepointwhere home computers can play chess at a very high level. Inthepast two decades computer analysis has contributed significantlytochess theory as understood by human players, particularly intheendgame. The computer Deep Blue was the first machine playertoovercome a reigning World Chess Champion when it defeatedGarryKasparov in 1997.
