Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is aunitary parliamentary republic in South-Central Europe. To thenorth, it borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia alongthe Alps. Italy enjoys a veryhigh standard of living, and has a high GDP per capita. It is afounding member of what is now the European Union and part of theEurozone. Italy is also a member of the G8, G20 and NATO. It hasthe world's third-largest gold reserves, eighth-largest nominalGDP, tenth highest GDP (PPP) and the sixth highest governmentbudget in the world. It is also a member state of the Organisationfor Economic Co-operation and Development, the World TradeOrganization, the Council of Europe, the Western European Union andthe United Nations. Italy has the world's ninth-largest defencebudget and shares NATO's nuclear weapons.
