Personal stories, neighbourhood histories:Acollaborative project in Montréal and Paris.

Too often we speak negatively of youth inimmigrantneighborhoods; we emphasize the processofimpoverishment/disaffiliation/de-qualification that affecttheseareas. This participative research project aims to provideadifferent perspective on these transformations.

Instead of looking at the phenomenon of decay, we askinsteadwhat is being (re)constructed, which allows the productionofidentities and cultures by: (1) highlighting thecounter-discoursesconstructed by young people to face the dominantdiscourse on their“anomie,” (2) analyzing the collective historiesthey build forthemselves and between them, (3) exploring powerrelations, theconditions that constrain or favor youth citizenshipand politicalparticipation.

In Montreal (in the neighborhoods of St-Michel andLittleBurgundy) and in Paris (in the suburbs of AubervilliersandPantin), youth are producing multimedia audio-guides oftheirneighborhood which can be uploaded on a telephone. You will beableto visit these yet-to-discover neighborhoods by immersingyourselfin the sound and visual ambiance created by youths whospeak to youabout their territories.
