Description

We have covered methods organizations mightuseto address issues related to the way people behave at work.Inaddition, you should now be familiar with the large numberoffactors, both within an individual and within the environmentthatmay influence a person’s behaviors and attitudes. In thecomingyears, society is likely to see a major shift in thewayorganizations function, resulting from rapidtechnologicaladvances, social awareness, and cultural blending. OBstudies hopeto enhance an organization’s ability to cope with theseissues andcreate an environment that is mutually beneficial to thecompany aswell as its employees.

Our values and personality explain our preferences andthesituations we feel comfortable with. Personality may influenceourbehavior, but the importance of the context in whichbehavioroccurs should not be neglected. Many organizations usepersonalitytests in employee selection, but the use of such testsiscontroversial because of problems such as faking and lowpredictivevalue of personality for job performance. Perception ishow weinterpret our environment. It is a major influence overourbehavior, but many systematic biases color our perception andleadto misunderstandings.

Several theories view motivated behavior as attempts tosatisfyneeds. Based on this approach, managers would benefitfromunderstanding what people need so that the actions of employeescanbe understood and managed. Other theories explainmotivatedbehavior using the cognitive processes of employees.Employeesrespond to unfairness in their environment, they learnfrom theconsequences of their actions and repeat the behaviors thatlead topositive results, and they are motivated to exert effort iftheysee their actions will lead to outcomes that would get themdesiredrewards. None of these theories are complete on their own,but eachtheory provides us with a framework we can use toanalyze, interpret, and manage employee behaviors intheworkplace.
