Incense is aromatic biotic material which releases fragrantsmokewhen burned. The term refers to the material itself, ratherthan tothe aroma that it produces. Incense is used for aestheticreasons,and in therapy, meditation, and ceremony. It may also beused as asimple deodorant or insectifuge.

Incense is composed of aromatic plant materials, often combinedwithessential oils. The forms taken by incense differ withtheunderlying culture, and have changed with advances intechnologyand increasing diversity in the reasons for burning it.Incense cangenerally be separated into two main types:"indirect-burning" and"direct-burning". Indirect-burning incense(or "non-combustibleincense") is not capable of burning on its own,and requires aseparate heat source.

Direct-burning incense (or "combustible incense") is lit directlybya flame and then fanned or blown out, leaving a glowing emberthatsmoulders and releases fragrance. Direct-burning incense iseither apaste formed around a bamboo stick, or a paste that isextruded intoa stick or cone shape.

Incense materials are available in various forms and degreesofprocessing. They can generally be separated into"direct-burning"and "indirect-burning" types depending on use.Preference for oneform or another varies with culture, tradition,and personal taste.Although the production of direct- andindirect-burning incense areboth blended to produce a pleasantsmell when burned, the twodiffer in their composition due to theformer's requirement foreven, stale, and sustained burning.

For indirect-burning incense, pieces of the incense are burnedbyplacing them directly on top of a heat source or on a hotmetalplate in a censer or thurible.
