সুকুমার রায় (১৮৮৭ - ১৯২৩) (ইংরেজিভাষা:Sukumar Roy) একজন বাঙালি শিশুসাহিত্যিক ও ভারতীয় সাহিত্যে"ননসেন্সরাইমের" প্রবর্তক। তিনি একাধারে লেখক, ছড়াকার,শিশুসাহিত্যিক,রম্যরচনাকার, প্রাবন্ধিক ও নাট্যকার। তিনি ছিলেনজনপ্রিয়শিশুসাহিত্যিক উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায়চৌধুরীর সন্তান এবং তাঁরপুত্রখ্যাতিমান চলচ্চিত্রকার সত্যজিৎ রায়। তাঁর লেখা কবিতার বইআবোলতাবোল, গল্প হযবরল, গল্প সংকলন পাগলা দাশু, এবং নাটকচলচ্চিত্তচঞ্চরীবিশ্বসাহিত্যে সর্বযুগের সেরা "ননসেন্স" ধরণেরব্যঙ্গাত্মকশিশুসাহিত্যের অন্যতম বলে মনে করা হয়, কেবল অ্যালিসইনওয়ান্ডারল্যান্ড (Alice in Wonderland) ইত্যাদি কয়েকটিমুষ্টিমেয়ক্লাসিক-ই যাদের সমকক্ষ। মৃত্যুর বহু বছর পরেও তিনি বাংলাসাহিত্যেরজনপ্রিয়তম শিশুসাহিত্যিকদের একজন।

Sukumar Ray was an Indian Bengali humorous poet, story writerandplaywright who mainly wrote for children. His works such asthecollection of poems "Aboltabol" , novella "HaJaBaRaLa", shortstorycollection "Pagla Dashu" and play "Chalachittachanchari"areconsidered equal in stature to Alice in Wonderland. More than80years after his death, Ray remains one of the most popularofchildren's writers in both West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Sukumar Ray was the son of children's story writerUpendrakishoreRay (Ray Chowdhury), the father of Indian filmmakerSatyajit Rayand grandfather of Bengali filmmaker Sandip Ray.Sukumar Ray wasalso known as the convenor of "Monday Club"(Bengali: মণ্ডা ক্লাব),a weekly gathering of like-minded people atthe Ray residence,where the members were free to express theiropinions about theworld at large. A number of poems were penned bySukumar Ray inrelation to the matters concerning "Monday Club",primarilysoliciting attendance, announcing important meetingsetc.

Ray was born in a Brahmo family in Calcutta, India on 30October1887. Born in the era which can be called the pinnacle oftheBengal Renaissance, he grew up in an environment that fosteredhisliterary talents. His father was a writer of stories andpopularscience; painter and illustrator; musician and composer ofsongs; atechnologist and hobbyist astronomer. Upendrakishore wasalso aclose friend of Rabindranath Tagore, who directlyinfluencedSukumar. Among other family friends were Jagadish ChandraBose andPrafulla Chandra Roy. Upendrakishore studied the technologyofblockmaking, conducted experiments, and set up a business ofmakingblocks. The firm M/s U. Ray & Sons, where Sukumar andhisyounger brother Subinay were involved. His sister, ShukhalataRao,became a social worker and children's book author. Like hisfather,Ray also was a very good friend of RabindranathTagore.

Sukumar Ray was also a leader of the reformist wing in theBrahmoSamaj. Sukumar Ray wrote a long poem "Atiter Katha"(Bengali:অতীতের কথা), which was a popular presentation of thehistory of theBrahmo Samaj—it was published as a small booklet tointroduce therationale of the Brahmo Samaj to children. Sukumaralso campaignedto bring in Rabindranath Tagore, the most famousBrahmo of histime, as a leader of the Samaj.
