নকশী কাঁথার মাঠ বাংলা সাহিত্যের একটিঅনবদ্যআখ্যানকাব্য। বাংলা ভাষায় রচিত এই আখ্যানকাব্যের লেখকবাংলাদেশেরপল্লীকবি জসীমউদ্দীন। বাংলা কবিতার জগতে যখন ইউরোপীয়ধাঁচেরআধুনিকতার আন্দোলন চলছিল তখন প্রকাশিত এই কাব্যকাহিনী ঐতিহ্যগতধারারশক্তিমত্তাকে পুন:প্রতিপন্ন করে। এটি জসীমউদ্দীনের একটি অমরসৃষ্টিহিসাবে বিবেচিত। কাব্যগ্রন্থটি ইংরেজিতে অনূদিত হয়েবিশ্বপাঠকেরদৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে সক্ষম হয়েছিল। নকশী কাঁথার মাঠকাব্যোপন্যাসটিরূপাই ও সাজু নামক দুই গ্রামীণ যুবক-যুবতীর অবিনশ্বরপ্রেমের করুণকাহিনী কাহিনী। এই দুজনই ছিলেন বাস্তব চরিত্র।
নকশী কাঁথার মাঠ-এর নায়ক রূপাই গাঁয়ের ছেলে, কৃষ্ণকায়, কাঁধপর্যন্তচুল। তার কতগুলো গুণ আছে: সে ভালো ঘর ছাইতে জানে, যে হাতদিয়ে সেসুন্দর ঘর ছায়, সেই হাতেই লড়কি চালাতে জানে, সড়কি চালাতেজানে, আবারবাঁশের বাঁশিতে তার মতো আড় আর কেউ দিতে পারে না, এমনকিতার মতো আর কেউগান গাইতেও পারে না। এই রূপাইয়ের সঙ্গে পাশের গ্রামেরমেয়ে সাজুরভালোবাসা হয়, আর তারপর হয় বিয়ে। তারা সুখের সংসারপাতে। একদিন গভীররাতে চাঁদ ওঠে, গোবর নিকানো আঙিনায় মাদুর পেতে সাজুরূপাইয়ের কোলেশুয়ে রয়, তাই একসময় বাঁশির বাজনা থেমে যায়। কারণযাকে শোনানোর জন্যরূপাই এতদিন বাঁশি বাজিয়েছে, সেই মানুষটি এখন তারইঘরে। সেদিন রাতেরপূর্ণিমার আলোতে সাজুর রূপ দেখে দারুণ মুগ্ধ হয়রূপাই, কিন্তুপরক্ষণেই তার মনে কী যেন এক সংশয় জেগে ওঠে। সে ভাবে,এত সুখ আমার সইবেতো! এক অজানা আশঙ্কায় তার অন্তরের বেদনাশ্রু সাজুরকোমল মুখের ওপরপড়ে, সাজুর ঘুম ভেঙে যায়, স্বামীর চোখে জলের ধারাদেখে সাজু বলে,তুমি কাঁদছ কেন? তোমাকে তো আমি কোনো আঘাত দিইনি। রূপাইবলে, এক অজানাআশঙ্কায় কাঁদছি। সাজু বলে, না না, আমরা তো কোনোঅন্যায় করিনি। এমনসময় হঠাৎ খবর আসে, বনগেঁয়োরা তাদের গাজনা-চরেরপাকা ধান কেটে নিয়েযাচ্ছে। রূপাই ছুটে যায় লড়কি-সড়কি হাতেবনগেঁয়োদের প্রতিরোধ করতে।সেখানে লড়াই হয় (স্থানীয় ভাষায়কাইজ্জা), কয়েকটি খুন হয় এবংফলশ্রুতিতে রূপাই ফেরারি হয়ে যায়। আরসাজু রোজ একটা পিদিম বা মাটিরপ্রদীপ জ্বালিয়ে বসে থাকে রূপাইয়ের পথচেয়ে। একটা মরা পাতা ঝরেপড়লেও রূপাই-বিরহিণী সাজু, পাতার শব্দ লক্ষকরে আলোটা নিয়ে ছুটেযায়, কোথায় রূপাই? দিন চলে যায়। একদিন গভীররাতে রূপাই এসে দাঁড়ায়সাজুর সামনে। সাজু দেখে, রূপাইয়ের সারাগায়ে মাটি মাখা, রক্তের দাগওলেগে আছে কোথাও কোথাও।
