Description

The Acoustic Transmitter app is designedforuse with hands-on guided learning explorations indigitalcommunication and signal processing.  A guided courseof studyis available at iTunesU [https://go.osu.edu/commlab] andMathworksMatlab Courseware[http://www.mathworks.com/academia/courseware/].The app provides adigital communication transmission signalmodulated to an acousticcarrier frequency.

The Acoustic Transmitter app can be operated in twomodes:carrier tone and text transmission.  In either case,thesampling rate to convert from a digital signal to anacousticsignal is 44.1 kHz. In carrier tone mode, the app simplytransmitsthe waveform cos(2πfct) for a 400 millisecond duration atauser-specified carrier frequency. The user can specify anycarrierfrequency to explore the effects of sampling and aliasing.In thetext transmission mode, the app provides a digitalcommunicationtransmission modulated to a programmable acousticcarrierfrequency. The transmitter implements BPSK or QPSK datamodulation,user-specified pulse shaping and symbol rate, a choiceof pilotsymbols for synchronization, and a data payload fixed at 50ASCIIcharacters. A user input with fewer than 50 characters ispaddedwith underscores to be 50 characters in length and a longerinputis truncated to 50 characters.
