Make your own Play Dough:

Ingredients
1 cup of plain flour
1/4 cup of water
1/3 cup salt
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
Food coloring, glitter, etc. (optional)


Method 1: Making Stove-top Play Dough

1-)Mix the dry ingredients. In a mixing bowl, combine the flourand salt until the mixture is evenly blended.
Adding a tablespoon of alum to the mixture will make the dough lesspalatable to a child, reducing the likelihood that the child willeat it. The alum also works as a preservative to help slow down thegrowth of bacteria. It's non-toxic, but large amounts can causestomach aches.
Adding two tablespoons of cream of tartar can increaseelasticity

2-)Mix the wet ingredients. In a saucepan, bring the water to aboil before adding the food coloring and vegetable oil. Stir untilmixed.
A few drops of glycerin can add shine.

3-)Combine wet and dry ingredients. Stirring constantly, slowlypour the dry ingredients into the mixture in the saucepan.

4-)Continue to stir. This step will bring your mixture to theconsistency of stiff but smooth mashed potatoes. If you find thatconsistency unattainable, add flour if it is too wet, and water ifit is too dry.

5-)Allow to cool before kneading. Take the pan off the stoveuntil it has cooled enough to touch. Remove your dough mixture fromthe pan until it's reached the evenly blended play doughconsistency.

Method 2: Making Play Dough Without Heat

1-)Combine dry ingredients. Pour flour and salt in a bowl. Mixthem together until evenly distributed.

5-)Knead. Take the dough out of the bowl to knead it on a flatsurface. Make sure it feels smooth and even, and work out any spotsthat were tough to mix in the bowl.

Play dough is a modeling compound used by young children for artand craft projects at home and in school. When a classroom of children began using the wallpapercleaner as a modeling compound, the product was reworked andmarketed to Cincinnati schools in the mid-1950s. Advertisements promotingPlay-Doh on influential children's television shows in 1957furthered the product's sales. Since its launch on the toy marketin the mid-1950s, Play-Doh has generated a considerable amount ofancillary merchandise such as The Fun Factory. In 2003, the ToyIndustry Association named Play-Doh in its "Century of ToysList".
