Bandipora (ˌbændɪˈpɔː) (misspelledasBandipore, Bandipur, Bandipura) (Kashmiri: بنڈ پُور,Urdu:بانڈیپوره‎) is the administrative headquarters of the districtofBandipora in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It islocatedon the northern banks of Wular - the second largest freshwaterlake in Asia. Bandipora has a terraced garden similar to thatofNishat Bagh in Srinagar. In Kashmiri there is a famous phraseaboutBandipora or in other words Bandipora is famous for three A's-A'lim (knowledge), Adab (good habits or literature) andAab(water). As can be known from the folklore, the name ofBandiporaoriginated either from Bund of Wular as Bund e pur, fromthe localFolk-singing Bands(بانذ) as Baand e pur or from theenlosed (بند)geographical location as Bandh e pur. Bandipora isbound bymountains on three sides and by Wular Lake in thefourth.
