If you know some Hare Krishna devotees I amsure you have heard them talk about prasadam. But you may not becompletely clear what prasadam actually is. The literal meaning ofthe Sanskrit word “prasadam” is mercy. So when we say “Krishnaprasadam” we are referring to Krishna’s mercy. To understand whatprasadam is we need to clear up a common misconception. Generallywe are under the impression that we are the owners of the thingsthat we posses and these things are meant for our enjoyment. Andthe materialistic persons are always trying to get more and morepossessions and enjoy them more and more. That is the materialisticconcept of life. The actual fact is that everything is provided byKrishna therefore everything belongs to Krishna. We can take thethings that Krishna provides and and use these raw materials toproduce something but we have to admit that we can not makeanything unless Krishna provides the raw materials. And we can nottransform the raw materials unless Krishna gives us theintelligence how to do this. It is something like if you employ acarpenter to build a nice bookshelf for you. You supply him thewood, you pay him for his labor, and in the end if the carpenterclaims that the bookshelf belongs to him he is mistaken. It is yourbookshelf because you have provided the carpenter with the rawmaterials and paid him for his labor. So the concept of prasadam isto recognize the fact that everything belongs to Krishna andbecause these things belong to Krishna they should be used forKrishna’s pleasure. Although most generally when you hear devoteestalking about prasadam they are referring to foodstruffs that havebeen offered to Krishna, prasadam can refer to anything that weoffer to Krishna. In the aroti ceremony for example many differentitems are offered to Krishna including incense, a ghee lame, water,a flower, etc. So all of these things also, once they have beenoffered to Krishna and enjoyed by Krishna, become Krishna-prasadam.So there is flower-garland prasadam, ghee-lamp prasadam, incenseprasadam and of course the food prasadam that we have all probablyexperienced. So prasadam means Krishna’s mercy, and prasadam is theremnants of something that has been prepared for the pleasure ofKrishna with love and offered to Him for His enjoyment. BecauseKrishna has tasted it or enjoyed it prasadam is not a materialthing. Once Krishna tastes something it becomes transcendental.Krishna and Krishna prasadam is non-different. This app containstraditional Hare Krishna recipes and my practical experience isthat if you simply try to follow the instructions in this app andreally try to do it to please Krishna, as an offering to Krishna, after you offer to Krishna the taste is truly amazing. I canguarantee that I have had many incredible experiences cookingrecipes and offering them to Krishna and then distributing theprasadam. - Hare Krishna Devoteee Kindly visit various ISKCONrestaurants around the world.
