The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815,nearWaterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the UnitedKingdom ofthe Netherlands. According to Wellington, the battle was "thenearest-runthing you ever saw in your life".[10] The defeat atWaterloo endedNapoleon's rule as Emperor of the French, and markedthe end of hisHundred Days return from exile. Napoleon abdicated 4days later,and on the 7 July coalition forces entered Paris.

After the Battle of Quatre Bras Wellington withdrew fromQuatreBras to Waterloo. After the simultaneous Battle of LignythePrussians withdrew parallel to Wellington, drawing a third partofNapoleon's forces away from Waterloo to the separateandsimultaneous Battle of Wavre. Upon learning that the Prussianarmywas able to support him, Wellington decided to offer battle ontheMont-Saint-Jean escarpment, across the Brussels road. Herehewithstood repeated attacks by the French throughout theafternoon,aided by the progressively arriving Prussians. In theeveningNapoleon committed his last reserves to a desperate finalattack,which was narrowly beaten back. With the Prussians breakingthroughon the French right flank Wellington's Anglo-alliedarmycounter-attacked in the center, and the French army wasrouted.
