The Yoruba Language is a Niger–Congo language spoken in WestAfrica. The native tongue of the Yoruba people is spoken, amongother languages, in Nigeria, Benin, and Togo and in communities inother parts of Africa, Europe and the Americas. A variety of thelanguage, Lucumi, is the liturgical language of the Santeriareligion of the Caribbean. It is most closely related to the Owoand Itsekiri language (spoken in the Niger-Delta) and Igala spokenin central Nigeria.

The number of speakers of Yoruba was estimated at around 20million in the 1990s.
