A hairstyle, hairdo, or haircut refers tothestyling of hair, usually on the human scalp. Sometimes, thiscouldalso mean an editing of beard hair. The fashioning of hair canbeconsidered an aspect of personal grooming, fashion, andcosmetics,although practical, cultural, and popular considerationsalsoinfluence some hairstyles.[1] The oldest known depiction ofhairbraiding dates back about 30,000 years. In ancientcivilizations,women's hair was often elaborately and carefullydressed in specialways. In Imperial Rome, women wore their hair incomplicatedstyles. From the time of the Roman Empire[citationneeded] untilthe Middle Ages, most women grew their hair as long asit wouldnaturally grow. During the Roman Empire as well as in the16thcentury in the western world, women began to wear their hairinextremely ornate styles. In the later half of the 15th centuryandon into the 16th century a very high hairline on the foreheadwasconsidered attractive. During the 15th and 16th centuries,Europeanmen wore their hair cropped no longer than shoulder-length.In theearly 17th century male hairstyles grew longer, with waves orcurlsbeing considered desirable.

The male wig was pioneered by King Louis XIII of France(1601–1643)in 1624. Perukes or periwigs for men were introducedinto theEnglish-speaking world with other French styles in 1660.Late17th-century wigs were very long and wavy, but became shorterinthe mid-18th century, by which time they were normally white.Shorthair for fashionable men was a product of theNeoclassicalmovement. In the early 19th century the male beard, andalsomoustaches and sideburns, made a strong reappearance. From the16thto the 19th century, European women's hair became morevisiblewhile their hair coverings grew smaller. In the middle ofthe 18thcentury the pouf style developed. During the First WorldWar, womenaround the world started to shift to shorter hairstylesthat wereeasier to manage. In the early 1950s women's hair wasgenerallycurled and worn in a variety of styles and lengths. In the1960s,many women began to wear their hair in short modern cuts suchasthe pixie cut, while in the 1970s, hair tended to be longerandlooser. In both the 1960s and 1970s many men and women woretheirhair very long and straight.[2] In the 1980s, women pulledbacktheir hair with scrunchies. During the 1980s, punk hairstyleswereadopted by some people.
