The NPA awards certification to phlebotomists who have completedanapproved phlebotomy program that offers at least 160 hoursoflecture and 200 practicum hours. The test offered by NPA hastwoparts including a two-hour written exam and a one-hourpracticalexam. The exam is a pencil-and-paper exam. Scores aremailedapproximately eight to ten weeks following the exam.Testcandidates need to score at least 70 percent to pass.Certificationis valid for one year.
Eligibility requirements for the ASCP certification include40classroom hours that must include courses in laboperations,anatomy, physiology, and specimen collection andprocessing.Applicants must also have 120 hours of practicaltraining. ASCP'sExams are offered nationwide at PearsonVUE testcenters. ASCPoffers the test in ten test windows that fallthroughout the year.Exams are computer-adaptive, which means thequestions increase indifficulty depending on how well the previousquestions wereanswered. The exams are comprised of 100 questions,andtwo-and-a-half hours are given to complete the exam. Followingtheexam, a preliminary score will be shown on the computer screen,andapproximately ten days after the exam, an official scorereportwill be mailed to the test taker’s home. Scores arescaled;applicants must score 400 to pass.
Requirements for APT certification include completion ofanaccredited program in phlebotomy and hands-on trainingthatincludes 100 successful vein punctures and five successfulskinpunctures. Membership in APT is also required; to be eligibleformembership, candidates must have worked full-time for six monthsorpart-time for twelve months.
