Shelves are one of the most useful furnishingitems in a house or office. Shelves can carry books, ornaments,tools, utensils, photos, craft projects and much more. Beginning Your Shelves
Choose your shelving board. Select a shelving board according topersonal preference, your budget and the way in which the shelvingcomplements your décor. There are a wide variety of potentialboards to use.
• Softwood boards: These are easy to have cut to the desired lengthand can hold many items, including heavy books.
• Plywood boards: This is made up of layered flat boards. Thesurface is often made to imitate a wood finish or it can belaminated.
• Particleboard or chipboard shelves: Made from wood chips gluedtogether under pressure, these are common shelving boards that arelightweight, affordable and easy to find. It is best to get thesecut professionally, as the makeup of the boards can blunt cuttingtools.
• Blockboard shelves: These are stronger than chipboard and aresuitable for heavy duty items, like tools and appliances kept inthe garage.
Pre-made and pre-sized shelving boards: These are traditionallypart of a kit and will often be made for adjustable shelves. Theinstructions for putting these together should always be included;if not, call the retailer or manufacturer.
Paint and decorate your box bookshelf as desired. Use one paintcolor only or multiple paint colors to make assorted patterns anddesigns. Or, glue other materials to the bookshelf, such as scrapfabric or old wallpaper. Allow all paint and glue to dry for about20 minutes before use.
