Raja Gidh by Bano Qudsia is an Urdu novel.Gidhis the Urdu word for a vulture and Raja is a Hindi synonym forking.The name anticipates the kingdom of vultures. In fact,parallel tothe main plot of the novel, an allegorical story ofsuch a kingdomis narrated. The metaphor of the vulture as ananimal feeding mostlyon the carcasses of dead animals is employedto portray thetrespassing of ethical limits imposed by the societyor by thereligion.

Hailing from an upper-middle-class family, Seemi Shah fallsinlove with her handsome classmate Aftab in the MA Sociology classatGovernment College Lahore. Seemi is a modern and attractiveurbangirl and attracts most of her male class fellows, includingthenarrator Qayyum and the young liberal professor Suhail.Aftabbelongs to a Kashmiri business family. Although he also lovesher,he cannot rise above his family values and succumbs to hisparent'spressure to marry someone against his wishes and leave forLondonto look after his family business. The novel then takes ontouchingseveral moral and ethical issues, beyond the love triangleplot,depicted through the rich culture and everyday life ofLahore.
