Поначалу Чехов писал рассказы только для того, чтобы заработатьденег, но по мере роста его творческих амбиций, он создал новыеходы в литературе, сильно повлияв на развитие современногокороткого рассказа. Оригинальность его творческого методазаключается в использовании приема под названием «поток сознания»,позже перенятого Джеймсом Джойсом и другими модернистами иотсутствия финальной морали, так необходимой структуреклассического рассказа того времени. Чехов не стремился дать ответычитающей публике, а считал, что роль автора заключается в том,чтобы задавать вопросы, а не отвечать на них.

Initially Chekhov wrote stories only to make money, but as thegrowth of its creative ambitions, he created new moves in theliterature, have strongly influenced the development of the modernshort story.
