Description

The concept for Special Olympics was borninthe early 1960s, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a day campforpeople with intellectual disabilities at her home inRockville,Maryland. Her vision quickly gained recognition andmomentum, andin 1968 the first International Special Olympics Gameswere held atSoldier Field, Chicago, bringing together over 1,000athletes withintellectual disabilities from 26 states andCanada.

Since then, Mrs. Shriver's vision has grown into one of thelargestand most successful sports and volunteer organizations intheworld. There are Special Olympics chapters in every stateofAmerica and in more than 150 countries worldwide, serving morethanthree-million Special Olympics athletes.

Special Olympics Northern California opened its doors in 1995.Whatstarted originally as a small grass-roots organization hassincebecome a powerful voice for athletes withintellectualdisabilities, encompassing Northern California from theOregonborder to Monterey and Tulare counties.
