The FOD (Fatty Oxidation Disorders)FamilySupport Group™ was 'born' in 1991 as a way of dealing withthesudden death of our 21-month old daughter, Kristen, in 1985fromundiagnosed MCAD. Initially, she was 'diagnosed' withReye'sSyndrome and it was not until one year later, when our sonKevinwas born and diagnosed with MCAD that we discovered Kristenalsohad this rare metabolic disorder. Our third child Brian, isacarrier of MCAD and not directly affected. To say the least,ourfamily has been changed forever by this genetic disorder.

Our mission is clear...to connect and network with FOD FamiliesandProfessionals around the world and to provide emotional andgriefsupport, Family Stories, practical information about livingwiththese disorders, and Medical Updates to inform families ofnewdevelopments in screening, diagnosis, research and treatment.Inearly 2010 we expanded our Mission and grief support toincludeface-to-face support for any bereaved parent/families in theEastLansing, MI area, not just those dealing with ourdisorders.

Awareness of these disorders is imperative for early diagnosisandtreatment, prompting us to be strongly committed topromotingexpanded ~ universal and comprehensive ~ newborn screeningfor FODs(and several other metabolic disorders). We do not wantotherfamilies to needlessly go through what we haveexperienced.
