Kaedah ini dibuat sebagai satu kaedah dakwah bagi umat Islamakhir zaman yang tidak bertemu dengan Rasulullah s.a.w. Hal inisesuai dengan pepatah Melayu yang berbunyi, “jika tak kenal makatak cinta”. Oleh itu, para ulama’ telah menghimpunkanriwayat-riwayat yang menceritakan tentang Rasulullah s.a.w.daripada para sahabat r.a.h. Namun begitu, kaedah penulisan masihberbagai dan tidak sama di antara satu sama lain.
