A remarkable book of fatawa by HakimulUmmahShaykh Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi (R.A.) . Some issues arediscussedin great detail while others are answered in a concisemanner. Bothlaymen and scholars can benefit greatly from ImdadulFatawa. Ashraf'Ali Thanwi (August 19, 1863 – July 4, 1943) (Urdu:اشرف علیتھانوی‎) was an Indian scholar of the Deobandi schoolwhosereligious contributions are still useful to Deobandischolars.Education Thanwi graduated from the Darul Uloom Deoband in1884. Itis claimed that when Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, one of thefounders ofthe institution, arrived for the graduation ceremony,MaulanaMehmud Hasan informed him that Thanwi, an especiallyintelligentstudent was about to graduate. Gangohi wanted to testthis studentby asking the most difficult questions that he couldthink of.Thanwi's answers reportedly amazed and pleased Gangohi,who himselfconducted the Dastārbandī Jalsa, the turban-tyingceremony markinggraduation. Career After his graduation, Thanwitaught religioussciences in Kanpur for fourteen years. Over a shortperiod of time,he acquired a reputable position as a religiousscholar of Sufismamong other subjects.His teaching attractednumerous students, andhis research and publications became wellknown in Islamicinstitutions. During these years, he traveled tovarious cities andvillages, delivering lectures in the hope ofreforming people.Printed versions of his lectures and discourseswould usuallybecome available shortly after these tours. Untilthen, few Islamicscholars had had their lectures printed and widelycirculated intheir own lifetimes. The desire to reform the massesintensified inhim during his stay at Kanpur. Eventually, Thanwiretired fromteaching and devoted himself to reestablishing thespiritual centre(khānqāh) of his shaikh in ThānaBhāwan.\n\nDeath\nThanwi died inThāna Bhāwan on July 4, 1943. Hisfuneral prayer was led by hisnephew, Zafar Ahmad Uthmānī, and hewas buried in the graveyard of'Ishq-e-Bāzān.
