According to theNASB'spreface, the translators had a "Fourfold Aim" in this work:Thesepublications shall be true to the original Hebrew, Aramaic,andGreek. They shall be grammatically correct. They shallbeunderstandable. They shall give the Lord Jesus Christ Hisproperplace, the place which the Word gives Him; therefore, no workwillever be personalized. Seeing the need for a literal,moderntranslation of the English Bible, the translators sought toproducea contemporary English Bible while maintaining aword-for-wordtranslation style. In cases where word-for-wordliteralness wasdetermined to be unacceptable for modern readers,changes were madein the direction of more current idioms. In suchinstances, themore literal renderings were indicated in footnotes.In 1995, theLockman Foundation reissued the NASB text as the NASBUpdatedEdition. The removing or replacing literal renderings ofantiquatedphrases and words, and many conjunctions, the currentedition isslightly less literal than the original. It hasintroducedinclusive language in about 85 places. The NASB remains,however,the most literal version of the English Bible commonly usedinchurches today.
