A few manuscripts survive. Inthe twentieth century, the script experienced a resurgence.Since the Meitei language does not have voiced consonants, thereare only fifteen consonant letters used for native words, plusthree letters for pure vowels. Nine additional consonant lettersinherited from the Indic languages are available for borrowings. There are seven vowel diacritics and a final consonant (/ŋ/)diacritic.One of the unique feature of this script is the use of body partsin naming the letters. Every letter is named after a human bodypart in the Meitei language. For example, the first letter "kok"means "head"; the second letter "sam" means "hair"; the thirdletter "lai" means "forehead", and so on.Photo: Gray Lake by Romain Guy

It was designed by translator and linguist Sonja Lang(formerly Sonja Elen Kisa) of Toronto.[2][3]Toki Pona is a minimal language. Like a pidgin, it focuses onsimple concepts and elements that are relatively universal amongcultures. Lang designed Toki Pona to express maximal meaning withminimal complexity. The language has 14 phonemes and 120 rootwords. It is not designed as an international auxiliary languagebut is instead inspired by Taoist philosophy, among otherthings.[4]The language is designed to shape the thought processes of itsusers, in the style of the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis in Zen-likefashion.[5] This goal, together with Toki Pona's deliberatelyrestricted vocabulary, has led some to think that the language, whose name literally means "simple language", "good language", or"goodspeak", resembles George Orwell's fictional languageNewspeak.Photo: Gray Lake by Romain Guy

Inhis system, each symbol represents a syllable rather than a singlephoneme; the 85 (originally 86)[1] characters in the Cherokeesyllabary provide a suitable method to write Cherokee. Some symbolsdo resemble the Latin, Greek and even the Cyrillic scripts'letters, but the sounds are completely different (for example, thesound /a/ is written with a letter that resembles Latin D).Tips:This app is useful for exotic tattoo design. To share the text, simply click menu, select send as image, andshare your text to Twitter, Facebook, Google+, email, Evernote, etc.Photo: Gray Lake by Romain Guy

It is spoken by virtually all of the 200 millioninhabitants of Brazil[3] and by perhaps two million Brazilianemigrants, mainly in the United States, Japan, Paraguay, Portugal, and several other European countries (see Brazilian diaspora).Brazilian Portuguese has had its own development. As a result, thisvariant of the Portuguese language is somewhat different, mostly inphonology, from the variant spoken in Portugal and otherPortuguese-speaking countries (the dialects of the other countries, partly because of the more recent end of Portuguese colonialism inthese regions, have a closer connection to contemporary EuropeanPortuguese). The degree of difference between the two variants ofthe Portuguese language is a controversial topic. In formalwriting, the written Brazilian standard differs from the Europeanone to about the same extent that written American English differsfrom written British English.[4] Brazilian and European Portuguesediffer more from each other in phonology and prosody. In 1990, theCommunity of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), which includedrepresentatives from all countries with Portuguese as the officiallanguage, reached an agreement on the reform of the Portugueseorthography to unify the two standards then in use by Brazil on oneside and the remaining Lusophone countries on the other. Thisspelling reform went into effect in Brazil on 1 January 2009. InPortugal, the reform was signed into law by the President on 21July 2008 allowing for a 6-year adaptation period, during whichboth orthographies co-existed. All of the CPLP countries havesigned the reform. In Brazil, this reform will be in force as ofJanuary 2016. Portugal and the other Portuguese speaking countrieshave already started using the new orthography. In spite of the use of Brazilian Portuguese by people of variouslinguistic backgrounds, a number of other factors—especially itscomparatively recent development and the cultural prestige andstrong government support accorded to the written standard—havehelped to maintain the unity of the language over the whole ofBrazil and to ensure that all regional varieties remain mutuallyintelligible.[citation needed] Starting in the 1960s, thenationwide dominance of television networks based in the southeast(Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) has made the accents of that regioninto a common spoken standard for the mass media, as well.

The maindialect, Kalaallisut or West Greenlandic, has been the officiallanguage of the Greenlandic autonomous territory since June 2009;this is a move by the Greenlandic government to strengthen thelanguage in its competition with the colonial language, Danish.Other dialects are East Greenlandic (Tunumiisut) and the Thuledialect Inuktun or Polar Eskimo.Kalaallisut or West Greenlandic is the name of the standard dialectof the Greenlandic language, spoken by the vast majority of theinhabitants of Greenland, as well as by thousands of GreenlandicInuit in Denmark proper (in total, approximately 50,000 people).Kalaallisut means "Greenlandic" and is virtually identical tomodern standard Greenlandic. It was historically spoken only in thesouthwestern part of Greenland, i.e. the region around Nuuk.Tunumiit and Inuktun are regional dialects of Greenlandic, spokenby a small minority of the population. Since 1987, it has been oneof New Zealand's official languages. It is closely related to CookIslands Māori, Tuamotuan, and Tahitian.According to a 2001 survey on the health of the Māori language, the number of very fluent adult speakers was about 9% of the Māoripopulation, or 30,000 adults.[1] A national census undertaken in2006 says that about 4% of the New Zealand population,[4] or 23.7%of the Maori population could hold a conversation in Maori abouteveryday thingsNameThe English word comes from the Maori language, where it isspelled "Māori". In New Zealand the Maori language is commonlyreferred to as Te Reo [tɛ ˈɾɛ.ɔ] "the language", short for te reoMāori. The spelling "Maori" (without macron) is standard in Englishoutside New Zealand in both general[6] and linguistic[7] usage. TheMaori-language spelling "Māori" (with macron) has become common inNew Zealand English in recent years, particularly in Maori-specificcultural contexts,[8][9] although the traditional English spellingis still prevalent in general media and government use.[10][11]Preferred and alternate pronunciations in English vary bydictionary, with /ˈmaʊəri/ being most frequent today, and/mɑːˈɒri/, /ˈmɔri/, and /ˈmɑri/ also given.[12] Spellingpronunciations as /meɪˈɔəri/ are also encountered in popularspeech[13][14] in the United States particularly, but areconsidered incorrect.Official statusNew Zealand has three official languages – English, Māori andNew Zealand Sign Language.[15] Māori gained this status with thepassing of the Māori Language Act in 1987.[16] Most governmentdepartments and agencies have bilingual names; for example, theDepartment of Internal Affairs Te Tari Taiwhenua, and places suchas local government offices and public libraries display bilingualsigns and use bilingual stationery. New Zealand Post recognisesMāori place-names in postal addresses. Dealings with governmentagencies may be conducted in Māori, but in practice, this almostalways requires interpreters, restricting its everyday use to thelimited geographical areas of high Māori fluency, and to moreformal occasions, such as during public consultation. An interpreter is on hand at sessions of Parliament, in case aMember wishes to speak in Māori. In 2009, Opposition parties held afilibuster against a local government bill, and those who couldrecorded their voice votes in Māori, all faithfullyinterpreted.[17]A 1994 ruling by the Privy Council[18] in the United Kingdomheld the New Zealand Government responsible under the Treaty ofWaitangi (1840) for the preservation of the language. Accordingly, since March 2004, the state has funded Māori Television, broadcastpartly in Māori. On 28 March 2008, Māori Television launched itssecond channel, Te Reo, broadcast entirely in the Māori language, with no advertising or subtitles. In 2008, Land Information NewZealand published the first list of official place names withmacrons, which indicate long vowels. Previous place name lists werederived from systems (usually mapping and GIS systems) that couldnot handle macrons
